A little wandering, a lot of laughing and absolutely no need to know how to pose.
I met Shirley and Rob at The Esplanade in Palmerston North for a relaxed afternoon photographing the two of them together.
These two brought such an easy, fun energy to their session. We wandered through the gardens, found some beautiful little pockets to photograph in and left plenty of room for them to simply be themselves.
There were spontaneous kisses, slightly questionable dance moves and a lot of laughing.
Basically, exactly how I like a couples session to go.
Couples photography at The Esplanade
The Esplanade is such a lovely location for couples photography in Palmerston North because there’s plenty of variety without needing to go very far.
Rather than staying in one spot and working through a list of poses, we could wander, follow the good light and let the session unfold as we went.
It also gave Shirley and Rob something to do, which makes being photographed feel considerably less daunting than standing still wondering where your hands are supposed to go.
You don’t need to know how to pose
One of the things I hear most often before a shoot is some variation of, “Just so you know, we’re really awkward in photographs.”
You’re allowed to be.
I’ll give you direction when you need it, help you find the beautiful light and make those tiny adjustments that make a photograph work. But you don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose.
I’d much rather get you moving, talking and interacting with each other.
That’s usually when you stop thinking about the camera.
And that’s when some of my favourite photographs happen.
Romantic photographs that still feel like you
Shirley and Rob were happy to throw themselves into whatever I suggested, which meant we could create a really lovely mixture of photographs.
Some are romantic and considered. Some are full of movement. Some are simply the two of them cracking up together.
Together, they feel like them.
And that’s always more important to me than making every photograph look perfectly posed.
“She made us feel completely at ease”
Shirley and Rob said afterwards:
“She knew all the right locations and made us feel completely at ease.”
Which is exactly what I want you to feel when you’re in front of my camera.
You don’t need to know where to go, where the best light is or what you’re supposed to be doing.
That’s my job.
You just need to bring your person.
Thinking about a couples session in Palmerston North?
You don’t need to be engaged or celebrating a huge milestone to have photographs together.
Maybe it’s an anniversary. Maybe you’re newly engaged. Maybe the last decent photograph of the two of you is several years and approximately three phone upgrades old.
Or maybe you just want some beautiful photographs together.
That’s reason enough.
