Summer sunsets, winter light and the wonderfully unpredictable reality of planning a Wellington wedding.
If you’re trying to choose a wedding date, you might be wondering whether there’s a particular time of year that’s best for getting married in Wellington.
The slightly annoying answer is… it depends.
Every season gives you something different.
Summer brings long evenings and late sunsets. Winter gives us beautiful low light and candlelit receptions. Autumn can be gorgeous and atmospheric. Spring brings everything back to life.
And because this is Wellington, any of those seasons may also briefly impersonate one of the others without warning.
From a photography perspective, I don’t think there’s one perfect wedding month.
But there might be a perfect season for the kind of wedding you’re imagining.
Summer weddings in Wellington
Summer is popular for very obvious reasons.
The days are long, the evenings are lighter and outdoor ceremonies become much easier to plan.
One of the biggest advantages from a photography perspective is simply having more daylight to work with.
A later sunset means we can potentially sneak away from the reception in the evening for photographs in softer light, rather than trying to fit everything into the afternoon.
That can be particularly lovely if you’d rather spend cocktail hour with your guests and do another little portrait session later.
But summer doesn’t automatically mean perfect photography weather.
Bright midday sun can be quite harsh, so if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, it’s worth thinking about where the sun will actually be at ceremony time.
And of course, a Wellington summer day can still decide to arrive wearing a raincoat.
Autumn weddings in Wellington
I think autumn deserves more attention than it gets.
The days are beginning to shorten, but you can still have plenty of beautiful daylight.
The sun also starts sitting lower in the sky, which can give us really lovely light earlier in the day.
Depending on your venue and location, you may also get changing leaves, warmer colours and a slightly moodier feeling than the middle of summer.
Autumn can be particularly beautiful for couples who love rich, romantic styling but aren’t necessarily dreaming about a full winter wedding.
You also don’t need to wait until the depths of winter to start bringing in deeper colours, beautiful fabrics and candlelight.
Winter weddings in Wellington
I am very much here for a beautiful winter wedding.
Yes, the days are shorter.
Yes, the weather can be unpredictable.
But winter light can be absolutely gorgeous.
The sun stays lower, the light can feel softer and earlier sunsets mean we can move into evening photography much sooner.
It also gives you permission to really lean into the atmosphere.
Candles. Darker colours. Beautiful coats. Long sleeves. Rich fabrics. Fireplaces. Moody florals.
And because you’re already planning for cooler weather, a little rain often feels less like an unexpected attack on the entire wedding concept.
I’ve written a whole post about the perks of a winter wedding if you’re considering one.
The main thing to remember photographically is that daylight disappears earlier, so your ceremony time and photography timeline become particularly important.
Spring weddings in Wellington
Spring brings longer days back, flowers begin appearing and everything starts feeling green again.
It’s a beautiful time for garden weddings and couples who want that fresh, lighter feeling without necessarily getting married in the middle of summer.
The trade-off is that spring weather can be wonderfully indecisive.
You might get sunshine.
You might get rain.
You might get both before you’ve finished family photographs.
But honestly, that’s something I’d plan for during most of the year in Wellington anyway.
A venue with good indoor and outdoor options gives you much more flexibility regardless of season.
Think about sunset before choosing your ceremony time
This is one thing I’d encourage couples to consider no matter what month they’re getting married.
Sunset changes dramatically throughout the year.
A ceremony time that works beautifully in January might leave very little daylight for photographs in July.
That doesn’t mean winter ceremonies need to happen at breakfast.
It simply means we plan differently.
If you’re unsure, talk to your photographer before you completely lock your timeline in.
I would always rather help you choose a ceremony time that works beautifully than discover later that the sun is scheduled to disappear approximately six minutes after you’ve said your vows.
Consider the kind of wedding you actually want
Rather than asking which season gives you the best chance of “perfect” weather, think about the experience you want.
Do you picture everyone outside drinking champagne in the evening sun?
A vineyard in autumn?
A candlelit winter reception?
Spring flowers and beautiful gardens?
The season becomes part of the atmosphere of your wedding.
You can work with it rather than trying to force every wedding into the same aesthetic.
Don’t choose your date based entirely on the weather
There is no month where I can promise you sunshine.
If there were, Wellington wedding venues would have booked every Saturday in it until approximately 2043.
Weather matters, but it shouldn’t be the only thing deciding your date.
Venue availability, the people you want there, your budget, the kind of wedding you’re planning and the season you personally love all matter too.
Whatever month you choose, have a wet-weather option you’re happy with and build a little flexibility into the day.
Then we work with whatever turns up.
So, what is the best time of year to get married in Wellington?
There isn’t really one.
And I actually think that’s quite nice.
If you love long evenings and outdoor celebrations, summer might be perfect for you.
If you’re drawn to warmer colours and softer light, look at autumn.
If candlelight, dramatic weather and beautiful winter styling make your heart happy, don’t be frightened of the colder months.
And if you love flowers, greenery and that beginning-of-something-new feeling, spring might be exactly right.
Choose the season that feels most like the wedding you want to have.
Then let Wellington do whatever Wellington intends to do that day.
